Eidfjord - with some quite scary driving

I picked up a Ford Focus rental car yesterday. First problem was where is the ignition slot for the key? There isn't one; as long as the key is nearby simply depress the clutch and press the Power button.  Next problem - how to engage reverse gear? Answer - slide a ring on the gear stick up before trying. Eventually I get going, collect G and J and the luggage and we are on our way to Fjordland due east of Bergen. We go on one of the national scenic routes that hugs the shoreline of Hardanger Fjord.

Scenic means twisty and twisty means narrow roads, often with only just enough room to pass another car, sometimes without enough room. I met a bus on such a section and the driver waited for me to back up, but I had trouble with the gears, so eventually the bus backed up! There were also lots of tunnels, one of them was 7.7 km long.  Up until last year you had to cross Hardanger Fjord by ferry near Eidfjord; now there is a new bridge.  As we enter the bridge the sign says the toll is 150 Kr ($27).  Can that be right?!!  We check at the tourist office and it is.  It will be another $27 when we head north to our next stop. Nothing comes cheaply in Norway.

We arrived safely in Eidfjord to a simple upstairs apartment (with a balcony) virtually on the fjord edge. Great views all around.

We saw the Voringfossen waterfall in the afternoon, one of the most visited waterfalls in Norway.

 The Fossli Hotel is perched spectacularly above the fall. 

It's hard to capture the whole view with a still camera.

We thought Voringfossen was pretty good. But today we walked a few km along the Kinso River and saw 2 more magnificent waterfalls.
